I make food-related wares that have a frontier feel. They’re a reflection of my lifestyle of resilience and resourcefulness. I take great pleasure in giving found objects and materials a second life.
For me, a regular devotional craft practice is a making meditation and is my medicine. Working with natural materials whilst being close to nature feeds my whole being.
I mostly turn wood and forge small batches of kitchen knives.
I tend to do everything from first principles. Often this involves felling a tree as a job and then crafting plates from some of the wood. I also make charcoal to then use in the forge. I teach bowl turning and hook forging as introductory courses. Other craft tutors teach and host talks in my craft school, that I’ve recently finished building. Together we celebrate and embrace the spiritual, physical and mental wellbeing benefits of a regular craft practice.
I graduated from West Surrey College of Art & Design (Farnham) in 1994 where I studied ceramics. Soon after graduating I set up a pottery making wood-fired domestic stoneware.
I sometimes exhibit at local food festivals and craft fairs.
I mainly sell from my small home-based studio shop nestled in a tranquil forested area of Great Doward.
