How would you describe the work you do and why?

While my work is generally linked in some way to the natural world, it is primarily influenced by my career as a graphic designer and the emphasis of grid based composition. I have been used to years of combining elements into a unified, balanced, and communicative, coherent whole, and this is central to my current practice. I also spent 18 years as a lecturer in art & design - and consequently 'set myself projects', researching and identifying creative problems to solve - as I expected from my students. Recent projects have covered Witch persecution, Ancient Irish culture, Piers Plowman and the journey from seed to flower. I am currently returning to the textile practices of Japanese Peasant life - but, a random History Podcast could easily set me off along a different path!

For you what does being an artist mean?:

I have spent every day of my studying and working life in what is now called The Creative Industries. To me it was just doing what I do. I don't see my self as an Artist, as such, just a visual communicator, who can't sit and do nothing.
