Details

How would you describe the work you do and why?:

My work first involves a lengthly process of sourcing and then pressing leaves flowers and grasses keeping in mind their potential use within a Shade design.
Months later I am able to open the presses and begin the process of making up the Shades, for use in overhead lighting, on existing Lamps of all sizes and also free standing table and floor lamps.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

To me, being an Artist is both a discipline and a freedom.
A discipline in that there is a long lead in time before a piece of work can be created, followed by the freedom getting into more of a flow state when I am actually handling the materials and feeling very present in the process of laying out the designs as I reveal the results of all of my pressings.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

I make shades for lighting, with the intention of softening some of the harsher aspects of modern electric light.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

I practice from a Studio in Kington where I am based and I make spontaneously, as well as to commission when clients require a particular specification.
This year as part of Herefordshire Art week I will be running my first ever workshop where people may bring their own pressings or select from some of mine to create a Shade to their own design.

Your gallery outlets/stockists:

Flock Gallery, 12 Church Street, Kington. HR5 3DY.
