How would you describe the work you do and why?

Entirely hand-built, Katie’s sculptures balance contrast and harmony: smooth surfaces meet carved lines; spiky textures are softened by organic curves; dark smoke-fired hues are warmed with flashes of copper leaf. Her approach is meditative, allowing each piece to evolve through its making, where control meets accident, and surface markings emerge from the unpredictable beauty of smoke.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

Katie Pruden is a ceramic artist whose sculptural work is a tactile and contemplative response to the natural world. Using hand-building techniques and smoke-firing processes, Katie crafts abstract forms that echo the textures, rhythms, and raw beauty of geological landscapes.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

Katie works from her home studio where she offers 1:1 workshops. Larger group workshops can be arranged on request.

CV & Education, relevant & leading to your artistic practice:

She began working with clay over twenty years ago during her Fine Art degree at Lancaster University. There she discovered an immediate affinity with the material’s malleability, earthiness, and expressive potential. This formative period laid the foundation for her intuitive, process-driven approach to sculpture.
