Much of my work in recent years has been inspired by my involvement with Knucklas Castle Community Land Project. The landscape, castle hill, orchard and allotments with their flowers and fruits are beautiful, and its rich, much unchartered history -real and mythological, adds to make it special. Through the Community Land Project's work this small corner of land is there for everyone to explore and enjoy. I try to celebrate all this in my work. For me it encompasses the spirit expressed in ‘The song of the Diggers’, with the words of Leon Rosselson: “The land’s a common treasury for everyone to share."
In the 1960s I did an Art Foundation Course where I learnt about Op Art, piles of bricks and Andy Warhol and there was plenty of discussion about the meaning of art. I wondered how I could make my art mean something. I couldn’t answer that question then, and I’m still wondering. But I’ve come to accept that for me it is in the pleasure of seeing, the pleasure of thinking, and the struggle to translate this into something new – whether it’s the extraordinary energy of a plant growing or the timeless, yet ever changing colours in a landscape.
Retired now with time to paint and explore other art forms
I have run several needle felt workshops
