My work is a reflection of my response to Nature through the seasons. I love to notice the often overlooked beauty in the wild and native plants and weeds. Lately I have been enjoying using Cyanotype as my medium. It is a form of early photographic print-making, and it has an ethereal quality and a timelessness that I think beautifully captures the ephemeral nature and fleeting beauty of the plants I see.
I've always found great pleasure in creating. For me it's a way to respond to the incredible beauty we have all around us in Nature. A way of acknowledging that I've seen it, appreciated it, let it delight me; and then reacting to that by recreating or, in a way, 'co-creating' something out of the way it made me feel. It will never be as beautiful as the original, but it holds some amount of reflected glory that brings me, and I hope others some joy and evokes the same feelings of delight as did the origin.
I use the name Alexa Summers Art for my art sales. I wouldn't class myself as an artist that works in one particular medium as I find some more effective than others at capturing the essence of a subject matter, and would therefore rather be guided by that than by the medium itself. Recently I've been mostly working with photographic print-making, drawing, and coffee painting. I also work with mixed media including textiles and stitching.
I work mainly from home using the plants I forage locally, and when I'm not making, I'm selling or exhibiting my work and presenting Cyanotype workshops in collaboration with Food Friends Flowers in Richards Castle.
I studied Fine Art at College and University, then went into teaching and Charity work both in the UK and abroad. In the past 6 or so years I have returned to focusing on Art and was involved in collaborative art projects in Chiang Mai, Thailand, before returning to the UK where I make and sell my own work.
