Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:
I am a ceramicist who is inspired by my upbringing in North Cumbria, being surrounded by the rural wildlife and local farms.
My work is focused on handbuilding animals in particular sheep and highland cows. I then use the Japanese technique of raku which involves putting the pieces in a specially built kiln which then gets to around 1000°c. Then the pieces are placed in reduction buckets where the smoke is absorbed into the surfaces of the animals to create the classic black and crackle raku features. Handbuilding combined with raku ensure that each pieces is unique and have their own personality.
