Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

Hello - I am David Powell of DP Tree Sculptures and I create freestanding welded sculptures of trees from primarily reclaimed and recycled metals.

Sculptures range anywhere from 20 cm to 100 cm tall, the largest of which can take 80+ hours to create. Inspiration for my designs comes from my lifelong passion for bonsai and beautiful trees of the English countryside, such as those found in areas of natural beauty such as the Lake District and the nearby Forest of Dean.

I also create a range of smaller fence post sculptures, also made from reclaimed metals, with signposts that can be personalised - perfect for a special gift!

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

My workshop is open during H.Art week, giving visitors the opportunity to meet the maker (me!) and see my range of tree sculptures in person. Like all artworks, photos really do not do justice so please do drop by to say hello!

CV & Education, relevant & leading to your artistic practice:

I have lived and worked as a farmer for more than 40 years. Though I established DP Tree Sculptures in 2019, I have always had a creative streak and enjoyed artistic hobbies - from drawing to bonsai. When I am not in the sheep shed or out in the fields, I can be found welding in the workshop, developing my latest creations. My craft allows me to combine my two passions: nature and art; with many of my works inspired by the trees observed on my Herefordshire farm.
