Details
My work was initially inspired by Japanese Boro and Sashiko work. You can still see these techniques in my embroideries, but my work has definitely developed into a more personal interpretation of these traditional techniques. I work with recycled denim, making use of seams, pockets, belt loops and rivets, along with patterned fabric scraps and brightly coloured threads. I have recently started making embroidery pots, and revisiting the basic premise of 'Boro', that is, repairing holes in cotton and denim garments.
Being an artist is all about the process. I never know how a piece of art is going to turn out. I don't plan; sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. I take inspiration from the materials I work with. The fabric I use is all recycled, some of it treasured items of clothing that has come to the end of its life, and some sourced from local charity shops. As an artist, you never stop learning, it's all about experimentation, exploring new skills and techniques. It's also about having some fun; I love making stuff!
I am a textile artist. I currently work predominately with embroidery threads and hand stitching. I also enjoy print making and free machine embroidery.
I have taught in secondary schools for 30 years, initially as a Textiles Teacher, however for the last 5 years I have mostly taught Art and Design to Year 7 through to 13. I have recently reduced my working hours, and am considering utilising my teaching skills and developing a range of creative workshops to be delivered in my local area.
I completed the Foundation Course in Art and Design at Hereford Art College in 1988. I then continued my studies at Nottingham Trent University where I completed my degree in Fashion and Knitwear. I then moved up to Bretton Hall in Yorkshire to study for my PGCE in Textiles/Design and Technology.
This is my first ever exhibition. I am excited, but also very nervous about how my work will be received by visitors to h.Art.
My work is not currently available to purchase, however, this is something I hope to pursue in the future.
