How would you describe the work you do and why?

Original Batik paintings mostly of flowers, which I then use to create repeat designs for silk scarves which are printed in the UK, also greetings cards. Colour is very important to me.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

I feel privileged to have spent the last 40 years making a living from something that I love doing. I have been described as commercial but I do not think being creative and being commercial are mutually exclusive.

Batik by Jane Hickman.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

Semi retired artist working from my home workshop and selling my work mainly through my website.

CV & Education, relevant & leading to your artistic practice:

Art foundation course. Fashion and textiles BA course abandoned after one year (rightly or wrongly...) With my husband running our small business selling my work at flower shows such as Chelsea Flower Show 2007 - 2023 and many and varied craft shows.
