Amy Hamill Maker profile

How would you describe the work you do and why?:

I create homeware as I am driven by the desire to create objects with function, that become embedded in the everyday rituals we have come to do without thought. It is my personal belief that having little chosen pieces of handmade items that we use every day can be a constant reminder to take joy in the little things.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

Getting lost in the creative flow of the wheel or handbuilding table, settles my head and focuses me like nothing else ever has. As more of a maker, less of an artist, creating with my hands is what I'm good at so it's what I do.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

I am a potter who creates functional and decorative homeware from black stoneware and porcelain; using both the wheel and handbuilding.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

I teach group classes at CUP Ceramics, ranging from 3-12 participants. I teach courses from a 10 week for beginners and improvers to advanced throwing and glaze science courses.
I help to organise the Hereford Ceramic Festival, and I also participate in other local events providing workshops and "have a go" style sessions.

CV & Education, relevant & leading to your artistic practice:

I'm not sure anyone needs to see a CV filled with retail and manual labour, but I studied fine art for three years in Belfast and craft for three in Hereford. I learnt most of my small batch wheel production skills observing other makers do their thing at the CUP studio in the years leading up to and after graduation.

Exhibitions in the last 3 years:

I am currently exhibiting with the Courtyard Arts and Applestore Gallery in Hereford, however I tend to tour local markets more than exhibiting work.

Your gallery outlets/stockists:

My current stockists are Lov Leaf, The Courtyard Shop, and CUP Coffeehouse in Hereford. You can catch me in person most often at The Fold Craft Market in Bransford.
