How would you describe the work you do and why?:

I am a direct stone carver, which means I do little or no preparation before starting a new carving. i get an idea, find a piece of stone to fit and just start carving.
Of course my commissioned work, especially memorials, is worked rather differently. Consultations, ideas, drawings, more discussions before the process gets underway.
These two ways of working gives me a good day to day balance.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

I find it hard calling myself an artist, rather a stone carver.
Although I do carve from my own thoughts and ideas, taking inspiration from the things around me, whether from the natural environment or from historical artefacts.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

I am a stone carver, letter cutter, I also carry out conservation work as well as running stone carving courses from my workshop in Knucklas.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

I am lucky enough to work from my workshop next to my home in Knucklas. I divide my day between commissioned work and my own work and I find the balance very rewarding.
i also run weekend carving courses and I am a member of Creative Breaks.
