Artwork for Charlotte Hern

Clytie in Bronze

How would you describe the work you do and why?:

When it comes to figurative sculpture, my work captures the essence of the subject in the piece I creates. Through the use of tools, textures and mark making techniques, I capture a likeness in clay before casting in a material such as foundry bronze, plaster or resin.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

I worked as a commercial sculptor and model maker for nearly two decade, having started my career as a modelmaker within a plaster workshop based in Bath. Over this time, I have developed a skill for capturing likenesses and mastered traditional mould making and casting techniques.

I have difficulty in identifying as an artist, and find myself describing my role as a sculptor.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

I am a sculptor, working in wax and clay. These models and sculptures are cast in bronze or resin.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

I will teach one-2-one as well as small groups. I have taught at the Malvern Hills school of Art, and am starting a 'Creative Club' for primary school aged children.
