My work revolves around narrative architectural drawings - each drawing is a cross-section of a home that inhabits an invented character. Each character is based around an enthusiasm that has been exaggerated - for example: Flora the Botanist's Treehouse of completely collected items; or Jonathan the Meteorologist who is afraid to go outside so collects the weather inside, and has an entirely automated home (pedal-powered washing-up machine included!) I create this work because I think that enthusiasms and interests are so exciting, and I think they should be celebrated. A lot of the work I do highlights elements of character that are often kept hidden away, but I think those are the gems of what make us who we are. Each piece starts off as a large-scale illustration before being shrunk to become giclée prints and cards - this is to get in as much detail as possible! Every print comes with the story of the inhabitant so that the viewer can spot all of the clues within the imagery.
For me being an artist is bringing things that you notice into a visual representation to share your viewpoint on the subject or bring awareness to it.
I'm an Illustrator, but sometimes I wander over into a bit of making too!
All of the pieces start off as large scale illustrations (approx 1m x 1m usually), which are drawn in pen and watercolour. From there, I create prints and homewares. Before starting work I work out the character, do a lot of research, and sketch up ideas for the layout of the home.
