Details

How would you describe the work you do and why?:

I make individual, unique and bespoke fabric banners, as well as large and small macrame wall art, jewellery, and kits. I love to make pieces that I enjoy - so you'll find amongst my products pieces I can barely tear myself away from, I love them so, ones inspired by my life and friends, and others that just make me giggle. I make for the enjoyment of making, and I delight in bringing people along for the ride with me.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

I think an artist is someone who sees the potential in the materials around them. For me, that looks like taking a whole loads of fibres, fabrics and felts, even some scraps from recycled clothes and making something new. For the very best of artists, perhaps it looks like having a vision in mind, and travelling from A-B in a linear way. For me, I love the process almost as much as the finished piece, so I tend to meander from A to B via H, S and Z, adjusting design and product as the process leads. I love what I make, and I love making it.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

Beth Parky Makes is an outlet for many creative designs, and as the tongue-in-cheek name suggests, it covers the many and varied skills I employ.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

I do my creative work around my many and varied jobs, which looks like a lot of late nights, and scrambled photo shoots around kids naps. As well as creating and making at home, I'm now branching our into teaching workshops, at The Shed (Warehouse 701) where access to good coffee and cake always accentuates the making process!

CV & Education, relevant & leading to your artistic practice:

I studied and excelled in textiles at GCSE, achieving an A*, having worked on the foundation that a creative home built from a very young age.
I kept my design and creativity more as a hobby as I worked in fabric stores around my A-Level and University education. I branched out into product demonstration for a crafting company, and appear sporadically on shopping channels showcasing textiles in use.
I started my own business in 2020, mid lockdown and maternity leave, taking what I could do as a hobby and using it to support my young family.
Since then, I've expanded my business from just fabric banners, to also include large and small macrame wall-hangings and jewellery - and continue to develop various kits for DIY macrame pieces, ideal as treats or perfect for gifts, and as of 2023 have begun to teach workshops.
