How would you describe the work you do and why?:

Scott has been designing and creating individual pieces of art and furniture for many years. He's currently focussing on fan birds, shrink pots and cutting boards. He tries to use locally sourced green wood where possible and makes use of every bit of wood left over from larger projects.

Traditionally in Scandanivian culture the fan bird is hung in the home and allowed to move freely with air currents. It symbolises protection, health and happiness for the family. They are made from a single block of wood and crafted carefully into birds.

The shrink pots are also of north European heritage and are made by hollowing out a branch of green wood, slotting in a base and waiting ... a few weeks later the green wood has shrunk to fit snugly around the base, thus making a watertight vessel. Scott then makes a lid to fit and the pots can be used for storage or display. We keep our sugar cubes and emergency chocolate supply in ours!

Scott's last batch of elegant chopping boards sold out within hours. Each design is made to accentuate the natural features of the individual piece of wood and are extremely tactile and practical.

Julie's cro-shades (crocheted+shades) are made using paper-coated wire. They can be used as pendant room lights or lamp shades and add a homely feel to any room.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

Scott is never happier than when he's given some green wood and working out how to create something beautiful for the home with it.

We are very lucky to live where we do with so much inspiration and beauty around us and other people who think similarly.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

We are Scott and Julie and we live in Garway, Herefordshire with our daughter Daisy and dog Martha.

Scott makes beautiful unique, tactile pieces from locally sourced wood. He is currently making quirky shrink pots, feathery fan birds and stylish cutting boards and platters. Julie makes cro-shades - light and lamp shades crocheted using wire covered in paper.
