Exploring through the medium of oils, I wish to encapsulate the human experience through food, sex, identity and the body. Commenting on commercialism and consumption within the collective consciousness of the Western World, my inspiration mainly comes from vintage magazines, films, and soft-core porn in which the body becomes an overly sexualized prop. Manipulating slogans from vintage adverts within my work, I like to twist and pull into view the hilarity and vulgarity of patriarchal society.
My work tends to be on the large side. The use of colour is meant to install a sense of unease in my viewers, this is achieved by my process, or practice. All references are in grey scale. The colours, are then drawn from photographs I have taken of dead flesh (meat, fish etc.) This juxtaposition of images intended for pleasure, and the abject flesh of dead things, and the large scale of my work, forces itself upon the viewers with a false intent to please.
After attending Wimbledon Collage of Art, where I was taught to mix paint and its mediums, curate exhibitions, stretch and build stretchers, take the blinkers of preciousness off, and shoot for the stars (and if you miss you might end up in a totally different profession all together), I was unable to paint for several years, and since settling in Wild Wales, I have not been able to stop.
Creating is a way of being seen without being seen. I paint in complete solitude, squirreled away in my little studio in Hay, compelled by a desire to improve my practice.
“Art itself is an attempt to bring order out of chaos”- S.Sondheim
Images embed themselves within my being, like a barbed seed. Perhaps they are a comment on my internal and external world, I’m not to sure. All I know is that if I can’t paint them, the barbed seed will strike, and consume me from the inside out.
