Details
Pottery: chiefly wheel-thrown pots closely related to function and natural forms, glazed with local clay slips which interact with my organic celadon glazes. Decoration is with oxides, wax, impressed designs or leaf resist, especially English oak, often incorporating animal or human forms.
Painting: I paint figuratively on canvas or heavy paper with acrylics, oils or watercolours, using keyed-up earth colours. For me, the whole artistic experience is about what I see and touch, which creates a harmony between my landscape interpretations and my ceramic glazes.
For me, the experience of being an artist means having a close encounter with the environment, either above or below ground.
Painter / potter. I make oxidised stoneware for everyday use and I paint landscapes inspired by Herefordshire and the Welsh Marches.
I make pottery in a cabin in our garden and paint in my attic studio. I offer personal tuition by arrangement, both in clay work, (particularly thrown but also slab pots), and individual or small group painting and drawing sessions, also a weekly drawing and painting class.
B.Ed Hons Roehampton Institute - at college I studied ceramics with Harry Stringer and David Leach, who taught me the science of glaze-making and inspired me to use organic material rather than chemicals.
