Energy 1 entry to Newent Art Competition

How would you describe the work you do and why?:

Just before the first coronavirus lockdown, my son introduced me to cyanotype photography. The original blueprint method, I was fascinated from the start and have spent the next four years immersed in blue. On a sunny day in spring, summer and early autumn you will find me frantically developing images like a possessed person, I LOVE this process.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

Pursuing an artistic career was not an option for me sadly and I didn't realise that I needed to create until I started creating again in my early 50s. Now I work in watercolour, oil, ceramics, photography, jewellery, candle making and anthotypes as well as cyanotype. You could say that I am making up for lost time. For me being an artist is who I am, now I've realised this I can't unbe it.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

I am a Herefordshire based multi media artist working primarily with the traditional form of cyanotype photography discovered by Sir John Herschel in 1842. My process led practice is rooted in themes of survival, recovery and the healing power of art.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

Over the last 4 years I have sold my work on market stalls and at craft fairs. Last year I started to do workshops and have delivered sessions to local groups and in a residential care home. This year I have started a regular workshop in my local village hall and am hoping to take this out to other village halls across the county. Please contact me if you are interested in attending or would like me to come to your community.
