How would you describe the work you do and why?:

Every piece I create be that a picture or item of jewellery is unique. I use these ancient enamelling techniques in explorative and experimental ways to push what the materials can do. I readily take up the challenge to produce anything I can sketch into a piece of enamel art. I do this because I find enamelling most addictive when you approach it freely respecting the foundation methods but always experimenting.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

It means seeing everything, one day I realised I was no longer just looking at something I was instead seeing it. Every detail, every colour change, every pattern and in seeing the world in technicolour I was open to inspiration and an appreciation of the world around me that was unlocked forever.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

I’m an enamel artist or Enamelist. I create unique kiln fired enamel work also known as Vitreous enamel. I also teach kiln fired enamelling across the country and at my own studio in the Forest of Dean.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

I practice a wide range of enamelling techniques including, sieving, adding decorations, sgraffito, stencilling, transparent and opaque enamel, using fine silver and gold foils, high firing, swirling and the technique I specialise in wet packing.

All these I also teach in my enamelling workshops which take place from my studio in the Forest of Dean and at many venues across the country.

CV & Education, relevant & leading to your artistic practice:

I’m mainly self taught, I didn’t attend an art course of any kind beyond A-level art. But I was fortunate enough to be introduced to enamelling by my mother who an enamel artist herself gave me a great grounding and furthered my knowledge over the years. I started teaching through assisting her in her teaching and then 7 years ago I left my previous career behind to focus full time on enamelling and raising my family.

Exhibitions in the last 3 years:

I’m a member of Far Open and exhibited with them last year at the Dean Heritage Museum.
