How would you describe the work you do and why?:

Andrew Findlay makes sculptural and functional pieces from hot forged metals. He uses the plastic quality of the hot steel, stainless steel and bronze to form natural shapes and elements which are then assembled into the completed form of the piece. He enjoys the immediacy and drama of the forging process, using coal, fire, water and pressure to achieve the desired results. The delight of working hot metals in this way has not diminished in 39 years.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

To be able to express myself using my preferred materials, to aspire to make pieces that are beautiful and will also complement their surroundings, be they interior, architectural or in the public realm

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

Andrew Findlay Artist Blacksmith

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

Andrew works from the traditional blacksmith's shop at Eastnor in Herefordshire, using not only forge, hammer and anvil but a variety of modern equipment that enables him to expand the vocabulary of his work in form, texture and size. Andrew has taught many students on work experience placements over the years, and plans to teach sustainable blacksmithing in a woodland setting in the near future.

CV & Education, relevant & leading to your artistic practice:

Andrew has been forging since 1984 and has worked with eminent designers and architects on many prestigious commissions including a three year art metal project in Dubai. He was invited to demonstrate as Artist in Residence at the Metal Museum in Memphis Tennessee in April 2015, where he created a signature bronze bowl before an audience of internationally respected smiths.
