Details

How would you describe the work you do and why?:

After several years of watercolour painting, I took up oil painting in summer 2023, fell in love with it and have been very busy ever since. I am a landscape painter, and seek to convey to the viewer the same feeling that drew me to the scene in the first place. I'm fortunate to live in the Golden Valley - there is something very special about the light in Herefordshire, but I know that many years of practice and hard work lie ahead if I am ever to do justice to this beautiful corner of Britain.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

Getting up at 5am every day to paint before the house awakes! Agonising over composition and tone. Constant imposter-syndrome. Trial and error. Happy accidents. Observing things that I had never previously noticed. The sheer pleasure of making progress and creating something that connects with the viewer.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

Peter Chapman
