How would you describe the work you do and why?:

I make functional, elegant wooden homeware like salad bowls, salt- and pepper mills, and platters. Most of the wood I use comes from the woodlands and farms around Kington, and is stored, dried and processed by me at our home.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

Above all, I enjoy making things that are aesthetically pleasing, feel good in the hand, and can be used in people's daily life. For me, the art is in creating a piece of work that people build a connection with. We all have items like that in our life: grandmother's hand carved bread board, that bookcase that we were given years ago. I always hope that my items will carry family memories.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

I am a local woodturner, working from our historic, Georgian home in the hills just outside Kington.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

I turn for fun, as well as for a living; I take commissions, whether for a unique bowl or a production of spindles, and I create a lot of sawdust in the process.

CV & Education, relevant & leading to your artistic practice:

My background is far from woodwork: I used to work in counterterrorism before I moved from the Netherlands, where I was born, to the UK where my husband is from. When I moved here, nearly 12 years ago, I traded a hasty, pressure-cooker type of life for a calm, quiet life in the hills of the Welsh Borders. I started woodturning three years ago and have never looked back.

Exhibitions in the last 3 years:

H-Art 2024 at Radnorshire Artists @ The Hymns, Hergest Croft Gardens Spring and Autumn Fairs.
