Info
How do you describe your Gallery?:
We are eight craftspeople using a mixture of traditional and contemporary techniques in our individual practices. Wobage Farm Craft Workshops are home to our studios and we sell our work together in the 18th century sandstone barn gallery. Renowned potters Mick and Sheila Casson converted Wobage Farm to workshops and exhibition space in the 1970s. In the workshops, studio pottery has been joined by cabinet making, wood carving, jewellery, printing and basketry. The Makers Gallery has celebrated many talented creatives over the years, including local musicians who delight us during our exhibition openings. One of the makers will greet you on your visit and we hope to share our joy of making with you soon!
Do you specialise in any particular artform or craft?:
Pottery: wood-fired salt-glazed stoneware, slip-decorated earthenware and porcelain. Woodwork: furniture, wood-carving and kitchenware all made from local timber. Basketry: weaving with Wobage-grown willow. Jewellery: gold, silver and semi-precious stone earrings. Collagraph prints.
What's important to you when you choose whose work to exhibit and sell?:
All of the work in the Makers Gallery is made here at Wobage Farm Craft Workshops. Pots are fired in hand-built kilns, willow grows at the bottom of the ancient Perry Orchard and timber travels only a few miles from predominantly wind-fallen trees to the wood workshops. We each have our individual inspirations and techniques, creating unique work in our idyllic studios. We run our gallery together and love talking to people about our crafts.
What's coming up this year?:
The Makers Gallery is open 10am - 5pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from March to Christmas.
Forest and Rivers Open Studios Arts Trail in July with weaving demonstration by Clyde Hoare.
During H.Art Week: Pottery demonstration by Patia Davis & Jeremy Steward, 2pm on Thursday 12th September.
Our Christmas Exhibition starts on November 16th.
Your notable exhibitions in the last few years:
The courtyard was bustling during H.Art 2022, with Clyde's interactive willow weaving demonstrations and live music by the makers. In 2023 we held the Mick and Sheila Casson Retrospective exhibition of pottery from throughout their careers with lectures on the Arts and Crafts Movement, Wobage's craft history and Clyde's willow growing and weaving practice. Under the hot sun, last year's H.Art week saw us enjoying refreshing drinks and homemade cakes under the courtyard canopy, discussing all things craft with visitors from far and wide. We look forward to enjoying your company this year!
