How would you describe the work you do and why?:

When designing items, I tend to gravitate towards a style of woodwork that is quite angular and linear (even when circular!). I like crisp, sharp lines and items that benefit from careful proportions and balance. They're often quite simply designed – with an appreciation for un-fussy aesthetics, my pieces tend to have a simplicity and modesty to them. I like to think that, if done well, this can result in a much more striking product.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

The joy of creativity. The privilege to make for other people. The freedom to design. I spent long enough working in an office, behind a desk; realised it didn't suit me, and now genuinely cherish every day that I spend in my workshop making things!

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

Woodworker; furniture and homeware designer and maker.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

Commissioned items and selling at fairs.

CV & Education, relevant & leading to your artistic practice:

Very little! I undertook one 5-day course at the Peter Sefton Furniture School (Upton-upon-Severn) and a couple of weekend courses at the Williams and Cleal Furniture School (Somerset), but otherwise have taught myself many of the techniques I use. I spent a year as an Associate Member of the Herefordshire Guild of Craftsmen, and early this year have been accepted as a Full Member.
I worked with listed buildings in my former life (but on the bureaucratic planning side!), but that brought me into contact with restorers and crafts people; I was always particularly envious of the carpenters working on the historic timber-frames, which no doubt helped direct me to what I do now...

Exhibitions in the last 3 years:

Craft Festival Cheltenham - March 2024

Plenty of shows/fairs/markets, including with the Herefordshire Guild of Craftsmen throughout each year.

Your gallery outlets/stockists:

I sell direct or through fairs and exhibitions.
